The History of our Church Northside Calvary Missionary Baptist Church began as a vision of an enthused young man who could not keep his faith to himself. He felt the need to share his faith with others. The result was the gathering of several people who wanted to know more about the Lord. The young man's name was Leon Hall and he started his evangelism work in Chicago in the mid 60's. As a struggling new group, a store front was rented in the vecinity of Clark street and Montrose Ave. Within a short period of time, the number of worshippers grew, so they decided to own their own building. With God's help, in 1969, the group started to worship in their own church building located on 1014 W. Grace St. just one block north of Wrigley Field. Because of the trafic conjestion in that area, the church decided in 1993 to relocate at the present address at 7654 W. Berwyn Ave, on the northwestern side of Chicago, close to O'hare International Airport.
Unfortunately, the church had its problems that resulted in two splits; furthermore, the migration of people back to their respective states left the church badly weakened and just about to close down. In the confusion of moving the church and the ensued problems, papers for the church building tax exemption were not filed with the County Clerk, for which Cook County began to tax the church. Three years later, the County put the church building for sale, in 1998, for non-payment of taxes, and letters were sent by the Sheriff's department warning that if taxes were not paid by July of 1999, ownership of the building would be tranfered to the new "buyers". That is when the Lord sent the tenth pastor, Dr. R. Winston Mazakis to lead the church, by God's grace, out of its dilemma and into a safe path, and the $35,000 debt was fully paid in exactly two years. Praise the Lord. Also, it is worth mentioning that our little church is believed to have made history in the sense that we are the first church ever to have a shephard who pastors an American church, Northside Calvaryare the first church ever to have a shephard who pastors an American church, Northside Calvary M. Baptist Church, and an Arabic church, the Chicago Arabic Baptist Church, at the same time; where the pastor preaches in English at Northside services, and in Arabic at the Chicago Arabic Baptist services.
During its history of existence, from 1967 till now, Northside Calvary Missioanry Baptist Church has seen a number of pastors, in the following chronological order:
